Conor Shearer is a Belfast based Filmmaker and Photographer, currently looking for opportunities and experience in Film or TV production at any level.
I have recently completed my degree in Cinematic Arts BSc at Ulster University, Magee with 1st Class Honours. For as long as I can remember I have always had a passion for taking pictures. Later, that developed into a passion for telling stories through my pictures. Growing up in a family with both parents as practising artists, I was thrown head first into this world of craftspeople and taught to appreciate Art in all its forms. I gained knowledge and focus through them. So much, in fact, that I am really only now starting to understand the depth of what they instilled in me. To them, creating and being creative was everything.
I have worked on various self funded, low budget, short films in a number of roles. These films include Stanza, In Lucem and White Heat. Stanza, a short experimental film, was produced alongside a thesis in experimental cinematic techniques in cinematography. This film won the Ulster University Greer Garson award. In Lucem, a short film about my grandmother's dementia, was shortlisted for the Cinemagic Awards and screened in Queens Film Theatre as part of the film festival. White Heat, a short documentary on my father Rory Shearer, a ceramic potter, won the Northern Ireland Royal Television Society Award in the Factual category and gained a commendation in the Ulster Media Show Non-Fiction category.
I have worked in the retail sector for six years, whilst studying, and I believe the experience I have gained in this varied role has been essential to my achievements in film. I have learned how to work effectively and efficiently in a team. Moreover, I am confident in team leading and I have had to learn how to overcome difficult situations by thinking creatively. I have been able to directly apply these skills to film making in many disciplines, including drama and documentary. As an aspiring Cinematographer, I am focused on exploring a narrative through the imagery within film. I am passionate about creating and experimenting with new visual techniques in video and lighting. I keep up with this fast moving, pioneering industry, using DJI drones and Gimbal technology to maximise my visual storytelling practices.
